Focused Leadership is a book which provides you a synopsis of the approach I diligently crafted, refined and applied in order to get the leadership results I desired over my 30-year career leading large and small organization in Fortune 500 companies as well venture capital backed start-ups. In Focused Leadership I have incorporated a series of informative and concise discussions regarding my leadership approach, which I now call the “10-Step Approach to Leading and Winning”.

When my first corporate mentor told me that in order to lead a team to the results that you expect, you must yourself be able to see “the big picture,” I thought I understood what he meant. It wasn’t until I failed to accomplish my first major goal and had the time to reflect on what went wrong, did I began to realize the true complexities associated with visualizing and articulating “the big picture.”
The big picture of a scenario is the broader perspective or objective, not the fine detail. The big picture includes a fundamental understanding of what is needed in order to successfully arrive at the destination. In addition, it must include a “roadmap” indicating how to get from here to there. As I matured as a leader, I gained and began to value my ability to envision and share with my team a broader perspective of our mission. That is, not just how we would reach our goals but also “why” we, as a team, were doing it.
As I mentioned in the Chapter one anecdote of my book, “The Elwell Production Program team also succeeded in establishing itself as a high performance team within Motorola.” I knew from day one of the Elwell Production Program that in order for this team to be successful in ensuring the launch of the STS-51-C mission, we would also have to achieve “sub-goals” along the way. One of them was to become one of Motorola’s most highly regarded production teams.
