Have you ever wondered whether or not you'd hire yourself, if you weren't the boss? Scary thought huh? Well, I hope so; otherwise, you'll have trouble finding people to work for and with you. A company's culture is driven by those at the top, so let's hope that your leadership is a model for the trust and transparency that helps people thrive in today's work environment.
Regrettable Hires
Over the years, I've most regretted the hires that we made when we were desperate to fill a position and simply didn't wait until the right person came along. It's those times when we hired someone and said, "Well... I think he/she will fit in" that I wish we would have held back and not hired the person because they most always ended up not fitting in and caused disruption and worry among the troupes. In a small company like ours, a bad hire can be a disaster ready to happen that can lead to unhappy customers and frustrated peers.
Thankful Hires
On the other hand, when we waited to hire the person that we said, "Yes, he/she will fit in perfectly!" our company flourished from the new ideas and excitement brought by the newcomer.
It's never easy to hire or fire someone, but letting someone go from a small company can be gut wrenching. While not having the disruptive person around would eliminate headaches, it means that others have to do their work. In a small company, the loss of even one worker can really be a burden, but when the dust settles, we're always better off working in an environment where everyone gets along and respects each other personally and professionally.
Over the years, our best hires have been the individuals who, even if they are no longer with our company, are the people who added value right from the get go. It is/was those talented individuals that freely shared their expertise and worked hard to learn our business, helped the company grow and provided exemplary customer service.
The Right Hires Make Leadership Rewarding
I've been very blessed over the years to have wonderful, talented people around me servicing our customers and each other. Leadership can be hard as we've had to make tough decisions, but leadership is also a privilege. In an event, leading the right people is always rewarding because they help you to be a good leader.
Must be the fall weather seeping in, but I'm feeling pretty lucky right now. I hope you can say the same thing about your business!

Scary question - would you hire yourself? One of the things I always look for when hiring though is whether someone would challenge (in a good way) the team. Culture fit can be dangerous as is sometimes a cover for thinking about someone who won't rock the boat. Boats need rocking!
