Often when we see someone in a wheel chair, we assume that they cannot walk. They, however, may see themselves as able to walk. Maybe it is only five steps right now, but they want to add three more steps next year and add five the year after. They are walkers. Isn’t it interesting that we see the limitations, and they see the possibilities. Lots of times we are so busy limiting people that we are not paying attention to the things that they could potentially do or how they see the world. As a result sometimes the reason people don’t perform to their potential is that WE limit them. When you look around your office today, who have you placed some artificial limits on and not even bothered to challenge to do something more or something better? It is pretty subtle but it does not have subtle consequences. Know your people and don’t be afraid to challenge them for more. Wouldn’t it be interesting if your poorest performer became a star just because you paid a little more attention to what they could do?
