REAL BUSINESS in VIRTUAL WORLDS - Weekly Meet Ups in Second Life |
Every day more organizations are moving their training to islands in Second Life and other virtual worlds. The article by Stephanie Simon for the Wall Street Journal, tells how hospitals are conducting this new method of training in Second Life. "Avatar II: The Hospital -Health-care facilities are discovering that practicing in the virtual world can have major benefits in real life."
Take a look at their video demonstrating how doctors and nurses are being trained for medical emergencies. As a learning professional, it's been fun watching the conservative professions like law and medicine move from boring, power-point slideshows to interactive, immersive training in virtual worlds like Second Life. According to Randall Hand of VizWorld, "Virtual worlds, particularly worlds like Second Life, are rapidly becoming more popular for enterprises and government agencies as global-meeting places where people can talk and interact without having to deal with the expense and trials of planes and hotels. An article over at ComputerWorld discusses how several companies have begun to integrate virtual worlds into their regular workflow, focusing heavily on the US Naval Undersea Warfare Center. "
"Back at NUWC, training has become, literally, larger than life. “I can log into Second Life as an avatar and walk into a USS Virginia [class] submarine attack center, which is the command-and-control space, where the commanding officer positions and executes missions,” explains Aguiar. Using Teleplace on an internal network in the prototype virtual attack center, operators can go in as their avatars and run the actual shipboard systems."
How cool is that? While some many companies are slow to adapt to these "out of the box training venues", their competition, government entities and universities are moving into virtual worlds every day. With economy as it is, and organizations anticipating cutting costs now and in the future, I predict that training in virtual worlds like Second Life is going to grow exponentially. Jonena
