Thanks for posting this! We need more examples of integrative success shared with the general public. Refusal to adopt integrative medicine and being open to the reality that medications are not always the best option for patients is irresponsible. As more and more many patients are actually demanding holistic and natural treatments, physicians that continue to ignore these requests may experience serious financial consequences in their practices. If a barber belittles my haircut requests and cuts my hair however he sees fit, I am not going to return to that barber and I am going to tell 10 others not to go there as well. Medical treatment is becoming increasingly similar as patients take to the Internet and do their own research. Patients are taking control of their healthcare choices and realizing that they have a LOT of choices, many of which don't include a laundry list of dangerous side effects. If my physician ignores my request to try diet and lifestyle changes instead of prescription medications, guess what I am going to do with that physician? At some point, medications may be necessary, but isn't it in the patients best interests to use them as a last alternative and instead, focus on long-term lifestyle solutions that will have positive impacts on many areas of the patients health?

Jerry, Thank you for your comments. You're spot on! Patients are becoming much more vocal about their desire to be treated in a manner that is best for their health in the long run. Often times, drugs mask the underlying issues and don't cure them.

Even though many docs still don't like to hear this, patients are taking charge of their own health choices. As more patients do this, we will improve the overall health of our citizens. We will always need the expertise of medical professionals and medications, but as a nation, we've become too dependent on medications that make us feel better "now" but don't cure us.
